As the children make the step into Key Stage 2, we build in extra sessions, at the end of the summer term in Year 2, for pupils to come and spend some time in their future classroom. It’s a great opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with new procedures, environments and staff.
Once the children start with us in the Autumn term, we begin
our main topic – Children in World War 2. This culminates in a trip to Beaumanor Hall where we all dress in 1940’s costume, take a wartime packed lunch and learn about life at Beaumanor Hall during those war years.
Materials, Magnets and Springs as well as Harvest and Christmas are other topics we focus on alongside Literacy and Numeracy. Children start to swim in Year 3 and outdoor games mean that a swimming kit, warm tracksuit and trainers are needed weekly!
We introduce children to the VLE and teach them about e-mail and internet safety too.
In the Spring term, Rivers and Rocks and Soils topics go toget
her nicely, both of which mean another trip out of school. Making biscuits and a pretty box in which to package them ensures that a treat at Easter is guaranteed! Year 3 team up with Year 4 to put on a production for the school community at the end of term. Country dancing is on the menu and all the children love it!
The summer term’s main topic is The Ancient Egyptians with another trip; this time to New Walk museum in Leicester. Light and Shadow, Teeth and Sandwich Snacks are accompanying units of work. We endeavour to link as much literacy, numeracy and art to our topics. Music, ICT, PE, RE, French, PSHE all form part of our busy and varied curriculum throughout the year. Before we know it, the end of another year is upon us and the children have blossomed, matured and developed and have the skills to progress through the rest of Key Stage 2.
