 Childrens Work: Year 6

In Year 6, we begin in the Autumn term looking at Coastlines and finding out what life was like for children in Victorian times. We experience a Victorian Christmas at Beaumanor Hall. The vicar teaches the RE and sets a project which leads to the award of the Nicholl's Cup in December. We also begin our Road Safety training and Cycling Proficiency instruction.

We have great fun doing country dancing and even line dancing! Yee-ha! In the summer term we try to improve our performance in athletics in sprinting, long-jump, throwing and hurdles. After SATs in May there is no time for relaxation (we have relaxation sessions leading up to SATs!) because we tackle a design project and learn about the Aztecs and Sikhism. We also have a Year 7 ICT project to complete for Welland Park Community College. There are also opportunities to take part in various activities at Welland Park leading up to our induction days there.

Days out include a canal walk, Warning Zone and a week's residential in Norfolk amongst other things! Year 6 is all about working hard, being organised, taking responsibility for your own learning dotted with fun and enjoyment!

Every year since 1946, Year 6 children have taken part in the Nicholl's Cup project. The vicar from St Dionysius comes in to school to teach a series of lessons that centre around the theme of food, sharing and celebrating. The children are then asked to either write a story, poem, prayer or produce a piece of artwork under the heading, 'Sharing a Meal that Matters'. The winner receives a silver cup which is so old now that it has a hole where it has been lovingly polished over the years! It might not look very glamorous but it is an honour to receive it! This is a display of the  Year 6's work (2007-8).

Year 6 were again successful in getting through to the Road Safety finals held at Lubenham village hall on Tuesday 22nd January. The team did very well and were leading in the first three rounds. However, they were eventually overtaken and came second. We are proud of our representatives and they brought back some prizes and a trophy! Well done Alex, Annie, Harvey and Billy.

As part of the Science curriculum, Year 6 have been dissecting daffodils (which was a shame as they are so beautiful). It was great fun to be able to see all the parts we had previously drawn as a diagram. We then looked at each part under a microscope attached to the interactive whiteboard. We were able to see the eggs in the ovary. Amazing!

We were lucky enough to have the Living Eggs inculator in our classroom. The chicks were almost a week old and we were able to hold them. Then we made sketches and wrote about the little chicks.

Year 6 visited the Food Festival at Brooksby Agricultural College to find out WHERE, exactly, our food comes from. There were many exhibitors and lots of food tasting was available. We had a tractor ride and some free samples to take home.

During Art Week, in October, we had lots of opportunities to have a go at many different activities including dance and music. As we were studying coastlines, we made collages using photos of different photos as guides. We have the Grand Union canal running through Market Harborough and there are many brightly painted barges docked in the canal basin. The canal artwork inspired the designs for our own plates.
