 Childrens Work: Year 3

Year 3 is all about transitions and new starts. By the time the Foundation and Key Stage 1 teachers have worked their magic and given the younger children a sound start to their education it's then up to year 3 to both consolidate this learning and propel the children forward for their inevitable move upwards through Key Stage 2.  Both the two year three classes work closely together to create a naturally holistic and creative approach to the curriculum in order to provide the children with a comfortable yet ultimately challenging learning environment. Whilst Literacy and Numeracy remain at the heart of our learning in year 3, the children are presented with a plethora of topics and projects throughout the school year in order to give them the wide variety of skills necessary to be successful and well rounded individuals as they progress across Key Stage 2.

In the Autumn term our focus is on World War II which inevitably meant that the children engage in everything from the history, geography, literacy and visual art of the war right the way through to looking at how we socially and emotionally interact today, and how the decisions we all make can impact upon those around us.

In the Spring term we will look at the senses and how the body works. This will involve the children researching various non-fiction texts - both in book form and through the use of ICT - to find out as much information as they can about the human body.

The children also incorporate numeracy into their research by presenting their findings in various charts and tables and using various units of measurements to predict and then measure various body parts to coincide with their research on the human body. Their studies will culminate in the production and presentation of a study booklet on an animal of their choice answering questions about habitat, feeding habits, size, weight, height, speed and a range of other amazing facts that the children inevitably discover.

In the Summer term we will be moving onto looking at the Egyptians, from the art and literature of the hieroglyphics and the incredible architecture of the pyramids, to the religious beliefs and faiths entwined in Egyptian history and mythology.

All of the children that move into year 3 are also given the opportunity to begin learning to swim at the local swimming baths which is something that we all greatly enjoy doing and value as an
