 Childrens Work: Year 2

***STOP PRESS***

January 2008 - Year 2 have been in charge of an incubator with 10 chicken's eggs waiting to hatch. We have been documenting their change as the days have passed and by 1st February 7 out of 10 chicks had hatched. The chicks are beautiful!

Year 2 is all about consolidating and building on knowledge from Foundation Stage and Year 1, encouraging independence  and preparing children for their move into Key Stage 2.  Both Year 2 classes work very closely together to ensure that all children have the same opportunities. We have worked hard to implement a creative curriculum that helps foster the children's different learning styles and encourages them to learn from their own experiences.

During the year the children will learn through a variety of topics which will link all areas of the curriculum. This helps the children to see links between subjects and learn within a context.

In the Autumn term we learn about holidays today and in the past. The children use maps, atlases and the internet to find out about different holiday destinations around the world and then compare this with holidays in the past. They will ask parents and grandparents about their holidays when they were children and find out information from the internet. We incorporate our artwork by sketching artefacts from the seaside and write stories set at the beach.

In the Spring term we will learn about health and growth. The children will learn how to stay healthy by eating balanced meals and taking part in regular exercise. They use their numeracy skills to carry out surveys of favourite meals and sort food into healthy and unhealthy groups. Our history work

will involve learning about famous people in the past, focussing on Florence Nightingale and how she transformed hospitals and the nursing profession. The children particularly enjoy painting portraits of famous people both from the past and the modern day.

We then move onto learning about electricity and the children will use their scientific enquiry skills to find out about how electrical circuits work. The children enjoy putting their DT skills into action through designing and making a vehicle containing a circuit!

In the Summer term we will be moving onto learning about the Great Fire of London, about how it began and how the fire was documented. We will link this to our science work about materials where the children will carry out experiments to find out which materials can be changed by heating and cooling. We will then move onto learning about Mexico and compare and contrast a village with Market Harborough. In DT we will be looking at traditional Mexican patterns and use these to inspire our weaving.
